Din Tai Fung is a Taiwanese restaurant chain that specializes in steamed dumplings, particularly xiaolongbao (soup dumplings). The company was founded in 1958 by Yang Bingyi, an immigrant from Shanxi, as a cooking oil retailer.
In 1970, tinned cooking oil became prevalent and business diminished drastically, so the owner suggested that Yang and his wife, Lai Penmei, convert half the shop to making and selling steamed buns (xiaolongbao).
The buns became so popular that the store stopped selling oil altogether and became a full-fledged restaurant in 1972. Din Tai Fung now has locations in several countries around the world, including the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Singapore, and Indonesia.
The company expanded globally starting in 1996 with their first international location in Tokyo, and their first branch in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2005, adapting to local taste and culture and also offering halal or non-halal selections in some branches.
Some of the North American branches closed due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, but there are still multiple Din Tai Fung restaurants operating in United States.
Din Tai Fung is offering “Stay Home Specials” promotions in Singapore, including a premium insulated bag for $9.50. It is unclear what other items are included in these promotions.
